The reason people fear frailty, dementia and disability is not only because of the direct effect of these conditions but also because they create the situation in which an individual is at risk of being deemed to need 'social care'

PEOPLE FEAR SOCIAL CARE

Obviously people fear the development of disabling conditions including dementia  for the suffering they cause but also because they may result in a person needing 'social care'. The term is vague although the Social Care Act of 2014 introduced a more positive culture. traditionally the term care has meant simply doing something for someone but it is now recognised that this can accelerate what is called deconditioning and decline

Unless death is sudden there is a period of time before dying in which one is heavily dependent on others and in a good death that period is a matter of days during which symptoms such as pain are controlled and the person is supported in achieving basic needs. However for some people this period may last months or years and they require not healthcare but social care either in their own home or in a residential facility, or 'care home

The mission of the Healthy Ageing Companion is to enable you to reduce the risk that you will need and have to pay for, social care

Governments also fear the cost and complexity of social care and the impact that inadequate social care has on the NHS
