optimise your use of the potential of the Internet

EVERYONE ONLINE

When Tim Berners Lee, the inventor of the Internet, was asked in 200 0 for his 10 year ambition for the Internet he replied that " I hope that in 10 years time no-one will be using the term the Internet". In a way his wish is fulfilled. there is still the occasional mention of the Internet or the World Wide Web but people usually just talk about Google or Facebook or Amazon, or about their Smartphone and many young people font's even bother with the Smart.

Getting online used to be a big deal. and it is still a bit of a hassle but increasingly people moving to a new house or apartment just expect it to be online, just as they expect it to be on mains drainage tor mains electricity and in fact the electricity companies are now just including internet access  with the electricity supplied to a new house. Obviously other equipment is need but with every TV bought in the last five years being digital most people now have the necessary equipment, even though the TV is often difficult to use in accessing the web.

Things are changing fast. the increase in the percentage of people over 75 using the Internet is increasing much faster than can be explained by the fact that more people reaching the age of 75 have been users of the Web.

CELEBRATE VIRTUAL REALITY

The Internet, the World Wide Web is just a means to an end , or to be accurate two ends
The first end is to make knowledge and make knowledge available; no more hoping the library will be open and that the library will have the book you want; the Internet is a knowledge service that has blown of the locked doors of medical libraries like dynamite. obviously there is lots of rubbish there too but the Internet allows us to give you access to the worlds best knowledge

The second end is to meet people and learn from them , or just enjoy their company. Increasingly this is done by using virtual reality which can allow you to experience, for example walking down Regent Stret, or the sea front where you went as a child , or to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats, taking a year to do it if you want and doing it with three old school friends even if they live hundreds, or thousands, of miles away. to do this you need to use the technology called virtual reality

HOW COULD YOU USE THIS KNOWLEDGE TO ACHIEVE YOUR OWN OBJECTIVES ?

You are obviously online if you are reading this but think about 2 additional resources, particularly if you are supporting someone else
  • Consider learning how to use a home organiser with voice recognition such as the Echo Show or Google home or the Facebook Portal or the Apple Homepad
  • learn how to connect more than two people using Zoom or switchh
  • try virtual reality, if you have difficult finsd a teenager, probably a teenage boy to show it to you

HOW COULD YOU USE THIS KNOWLEDGE IF YOU ARE SUPPORTING SOMEONE ELSE ?

if they do not have the necessary, equipment, skills or confidence help them
  • Get online, and if they can do this
  • Try voice recognition and
  • Learn how to relate to more than one person online and
  • Try virtual reality
